Threshold of Summer

A picture perfect produce presentation from Urban Gourmet Memorial Day weekend often feels like the gateway to summer. With just a few weeks left of school and the weather warming up around us, we all get that summer itch. That feeling is strong at the farmers' market, with the big boom of summer produce only a few weeks away. This year, with a cooler and wetter spring than normal, we're a little slow to get out the gate. That won't be stopping us from making the most out of this weekend however and with many a Memorial Day cookout happening, a stop at the market on Saturday morning is the best place to begin. For those of us pulling out the grills this weekend, swing on over to McCl

Sunk into Spring

Welcome back Yang Family Produce with tender stalks of asparagus! Now that we're five markets into the 2017 season, we're to the point where the abundance of the growing season is up to our knees. Fortunately, being waste deep in the market season is something we're happy to push on into. The market this last Saturday held even more goodness, especially as we welcomed back Yang Family Produce with fresh asparagus and the first fresh mint of the season. The nice weather brought plenty of eager gardeners out to the market this past weekend, and Country Bloomer's Greenhouse was there to satisfy those green thumbs with beautiful flower starts. Beyond their plants, Country Bloomer's has add

Market Moms

Fresh rhubarb from Vang Family Farm Each season, as spring rolls through, we're lucky enough to take a beat, pause and give thanks to the moms in our lives. At the farmers' market, we see "moms" of all types, and are grateful for each. There is the grandma, who brings her grandson out to the market to enjoy a honey stick from B's Honey, dance and shake a tambourine to Moldy Jam, and take in the sights and sounds of the farmers' market. There's the full plate mom, out with all the kids, getting the weekly shopping done and keeping the crew in line, while enjoying the day and the time with the family. Then there's the farmer mom, who works hard all week and is out early on Saturday morning

A Spring in our Step

Beautiful pansy flowers from Country Bloomer's Greenhouse We're rolling right into the thick of the spring and week three of the 2017 season was singing it from all corners of the market. We welcomed back Kevin Lucey of Happy Valley Farm with those most precious spring morsels, morel mushrooms. If you get a chance, ask Kevin about some of his legendary mushroom finds. Spring, summer or fall, Kevin has great story to match the season. The first spring onions and green garlic appeared this past weekend as we welcomed back Shoua Vang and their bundles of tender rhubarb stalks. Asparagus was spotted as well, and with the rain we've had this week, we can expect to see more this Saturday.
