Say it isn't so! The end of August is here? Already?
The kids are heading back to school next week, people are shoring up their Labor Day weekend plans and the farmers' market is heading into the third and final session of the season.
Thankfully that means we have ten more weeks to enjoy all the Wisconsin produce, fresh baked breads, savory cheeses and all our other favorites before we pack it in for the season.
We made the most of our final August market last Saturday with the return of the Zucchini Car Races (pictured). We saw 120+ cars made throughout the day and many more smiles from racers and observers alike. A huge thank you to our zucchini donors, Blue Moon Community Farm, County Line Plants & Produceand Urban Gourmet.
There is plenty to look forward to for session 3, including that delicious apple cider from Atoms to Apples, the return of Roots Chocolate and later in the session, those bog b...
Not to throw shade, but fresh produce hogs the mid-season spotlight. We get it. Who could look away from the glistening stack of melons from Green's Pleasant Springs Orchard or those enormous opo squash from Shoua Vang?
We're not saying produce doesn't deserve the accolades, but what about the other players out there giving the mid-season the full encompassing market performance that brings us back week after week?
For example, the new Sweet-Hot Chipotle Sauce from Dreamfarm is a real show stopper, giving us depth and excitement all in one.
Cantaloupe may revel in its time on stage, but where would it be without the consistent performance of the oft unsung supporting role of cottage cheese from Murphy Farms?
The sourdough miche loaf from Madison Sourdough Company may get pigeonholed as a character actor on the market stage. Sure, it's large and it makes you smile, but it's also incredib...
National Farmers' Market Week is always one for the books. For us here in Wisconsin, it comes right in the middle of market season where it feels like the celebration is well under way.
The tents are packed with fresh produce of all sorts, from heads of JenEhr Family Farm cauliflower (pictured) to those tasty red Sweet Carmen peppers from Black Earth Produce.
For many of us, celebrating National Farmers' Market Week is as simple as making a great meal out of our market finds. It's firing up the grill to throw on some brats from Pecatonica Valley Farm, followed by a big slice of watermelon from Flyte Family Farm.
To us that's the best way to celebrate what we all value in our markets, with good food! And yet, farmers' markets give us so much more to celebrate and be thankful for. It's the community connections, the access to fresh food, the chance to meet yo...
The produce was abundant, the flowers were beautiful and one couldn't have asked for better weather. All signs pointed to a near perfect market this last weekend.
This time of year has us spinning in circles deciding what we can fit in each week. Is there time for roasting tomatillos (pictured) from Natalie's Garden & Greenhouse to make that tasty salsa verde? Or are we better off putting up raspberry jam with fresh red raspberries from Yang Family Produce? Time for both?
Fans of grilling out can head in many directions with their market finds. Everything from chicken brats from Pecatonica Valley Farm to big zucchini from Don's Produce are there to find, plus plenty of sweet corn to add on as well.
Moving into August we've got lots to look forward to. We start off this weekend with the opening day of National Farmers' Market Week. We feel like every market is a celebration, but we'll take an extra moment to enjoy...
