That Little Extra

Dreamy Watermelons from Flyte Family Farms

That Little Extra

In the peak of the summer market season there's just no way to make all the possibilities in one week. Winnowing down the seemingly endless meal options takes some effort, but oft it's the smallest inspiration that brings things into focus.

A few weeks back we talked about the ever delicious, caprese salad, so easy to make with fresh tomatoes and basil from Blue Moon Community Farm and mozzarella from Farmer Johns' Cheese. This week, we were inspired by the fresh peaches coming in from Door County Fruit Markets (pictured) to go the extra mile and layer in juicy peach slices along our vine ripened tomatoes for a special twist on this summertime favorite.

In another spark, the early season apples coming in from Pleasant Springs Orchard sets our mind on juicy pan-roasted pork chops from ParKelm Farm pared up with homemade applesauce. Early season varieties like Lodi and Transparent make excellent sauce.

Some ideas snowball as you walk the market, seeing one great find, like fresh tomatillos from JenEhr Family Farm (pictured) and then hot peppers from County Line Plants & Produce. Just like that, dreams of fresh salsa verde come to mind with charred peppers giving you that extra kick. Grab a bag of blue corn tortilla chips from Tortillas Los Angeles and you're set for snack time.

Often it's the desire to try something new to us that keeps the menu options fresh and unique. Long beans coming in from Yang Family Produce (pictured) encouraged us to branch out and try this delicious recipe for charred long beans with garlic butter.

So keep those eyes open for the special somethings that inspire you and your summer kitchen. Even beyond the plate, the market can offer something unique, like bouquets of lisianthus flowers coming in from Country Bloomer's Greenhouse this weekend.

Take it all in, be inspired and savor the season.

See you at market!
