Minor Players - Major Characters
Not to throw shade, but fresh produce hogs the mid-season spotlight. We get it. Who could look away from the glistening stack of melons from Green's Pleasant Springs Orchard or those enormous opo squash from Shoua Vang?
We're not saying produce doesn't deserve the accolades, but what about the other players out there giving the mid-season the full encompassing market performance that brings us back week after week? For example, the new Sweet-Hot Chipotle Sauce from Dreamfarm is a real show stopper, giving us depth and excitement all in one. Cantaloupe may revel in its time on stage, but where would it be without the consistent performance of the oft unsung supporting role of cottage cheese from Murphy Farms? The sourdough miche loaf from Madison Sourdough Company may get pigeonholed as a character actor on the market stage. Sure, it's large and it makes you smile, but it's also incredibly delicious and there for every scene where tasty sourdough is needed. We love our stars, our fresh Door County peaches, our heirloom tomatoes and our Listada di Gandia eggplants. Yet, the market theatre is brought to life by so much more and in the height of the market season, it's important not to overlook the other players. So grab your market baskets and enjoy the show, from the first cheese curd to the last apple. See you at the market! Ben Zimmerman Market Manager
